Miniature and slower growing dwarf conifers are the perfect companions for alpines when planted in troughs and rock gardens. Many of the plants in this list come in 4" and 1 gallon containers. However, some will only be available in larger sizes. Please check for size availability and price.

HEMLOCKS

Tsuga canadensis 'Cole's Prostrate'

Stiff main branches knuckle under and bend downwards making a truly prostrate form. Gnarly interior branches display silver bark, adding dimension to this excellent low-spreading hemlock. Use to drape over or around stones or walls in the landscape. A true garden gem!

Tsuga canadensis ‘Horsford Contorted’

Twisted branches and coiled, contorted branchlets make 'Horsford Contorted' an interesting and surprisingly attractive compact plant. Sometimes found listed as 'Pig Tails', which accurately describes the curious branching pattern. Will make a curious addition to the garden.

Tsuga diversifolia ‘Loowit’

Small, blunt needles look like green grains of rice interspersed with tiny brown buds. Diminutive branches crowded with branchlets form a tight, congested bun. This dwarf hemlock was selected from seed collected in the high alpine region of Fukushima prefecture, Japan. This small tree is also referred to as the Japanese rice tree.

Originated as a witch's broom in the Tharandt Fores Garden, Germany. This forms a flat-topped globe with soft green leaves and cinnamon-colored branchlets. It turns a nice orange-brown in the fall before dropping it's leaves for winter. 10 years: 18” tall x 24” wide. Hardy to -50 degrees!

PINES - Bosnian

Pinus heldrechii 'Schmidtii'

A favorite small pine. It is handsome and ideal for the small garden space, such as a rock garden or even as a container plant. A ten-year-old plant may be 12 inches in height and 12 inches across, appearing like a bright green globe. The foliage is dense, and the needles are sharp and about 3 inches in length. This nicely shaped miniature bun has wonderful light green needles. It is one of the best of the dwarf, bun-shaped Eastern White Pine available. It is a selection of Greg Williams of Kate Brook Nursery in Vermont. A height and width of 2 feet in ten years makes this a perfect miniature for use in a dwarf garden or mixed with perennials.

PINES - Japanese Stone Pine

Pinus pumila 'Dwarf Blue'

Selected for the spring display of carmine red cones that contrast with the superior blue needle color. This unusual dwarf Siberian Pine is densely covered with twisted needles and has a horizontal spreading habit unlike others in cultivation. Pinus pumila is found in extremely cold, exposed regions of north-eastern Asia.

Pinus mugo 'Mops'

This genuinely dwarf, winning selection grows into a low, dense dome that stays compact without shearing. The smooth appearance of the mounded plant is the result of many evenly spaced needles on abundant branchlets, all of which grow at a uniform rate. During most of the year, 'Mops' displays a hint of gray/blue in its green, but during the crisp, cold months of winter, needles take on a warm, golden hue. Great for confined spaces.

Pinus mugo ‘Slowmound’

This Iseli introduction has so many superior traits that it is designated a Jean Iseli Signature plant. Discovered as a seedling at the nursery, the dense, dark green mound is one of the best, claiming highly reliable color and texture, growth rate and habit. The year-round beauty produces many showy brown buds and matures to a wide, even shape. Plants can be gently sheared to slow growth, but they are naturally compact enough to us even in the most confined areas.
